FAQ

What if you are nervous about attending camp?

Many Cubs get scared or nervous before attending their first day at camp, whether it’s day camp or overnight camp. This is quite normal, but once the Cubs arrive there is a full program of activities to keep them occupied and more experienced Cubs can Buddy up with those less experienced. All Leaders are Trained and can help your Cub feel more comfortable. They should bring a special toy, blanket or pillow for sleep time to have that at night for comfort.

Do volunteers need special training to go camping with cubs?

The adults helping Cubs on camping trips must have special training provided by Scouts Australia. The adults needs to be a registered member of Scouts Australia.

The Unit Leader must also have additional modules of training to allow for overnight trips that include camping.

There must also be an adult who has first-aid training, and there is a dedicated wellbeing leader who’s primary task is to ensure ALL Cubs have a great and positive experience.

Do they need both sleeping bag and sleeping mat?

The sleeping bag is to keep them warm and the mat is to give them comfort and insulation from the ground, the kit list provided has options for mat, you don’t need more than one floor covering. Kmart Self Inflating Mattress+Pillow or Kmart Insulated Foam Roll

My Cub has dietary requirements do you cater for these?

Yes, all known dietary requirements are catered for and there is always ample food. If you child has complex dietary requirements then please discuss with the Leader in plenty of time so arrangements can be made.

If you only advise us of dietary requirements on the day of camp there may be limited options available.

Can we pack some food for the kids?

We ask for no food be brought with the kids as we have to ensure all items are allergy free for some kids. Plus we don’t want ants to have a food source inside the tents.

Are toilets close by the sleeping area? If they want to use the toilet in the night will someone accompany them?

We always Buddy Cubs up and they are asked to go with a Buddy to toilet after alerting the Leader who is supervising the activity.

At night for the toilets, they are close yes, and we get them to Buddy with someone in the tent to go.

Can My kids can sleep together?

We have boy tents and girl tents with 4-6 cubs in each tent. If your Cubs are of the same sex then they may be able to sleep together but the leaders will allocate Cubs to tents based on the patrols that they are allocated to.

If your Kids are different sexes then No, your kids would be in separate tents.

Can My Cub sleep on their own?

No, we have group tents for Buys and Girls, Cubs generally require assistance putting tents up and down, and there is often limited space onsite for all the tentage and activities, therefore we do not allow this.

We can’t allow separate tents as that may mean 30 tents to be put up and taken down

Is there phone reception so cubs can call/msg to say hi?

Even though there might be network, we ask that all technology is not brought to camp, there are a few reasons for this.

  • They might get lost.
  • They might break.
  • Phone calls home generally makes home sickness worse, it is much better if kids talk to the leaders about their concerns as there is often an easy fix for the issue that is worrying them.

What if it rains?

On the equipment list we recommend bringing a rain coat so that if there is a shower, they can wear these.

If the rain is persistent then there are group shelters that are used for dining that can then be utilised for wet weather activities.

All the tents are designed to keep water out so they should stay dry at night.

What if my Cub sometimes has accidents at night?

If your cub has an accident the leaders will have options to assist, most times there is a spare sleeping bag available and will help your cub to resettle.

We do recommend packing some plastic bags for wet/dirty clothes and an extra pair of PJ’s especially if you know your child has a tendency to have toilet accidents.

What should we pack?

A kit list is provided, please try and follow that.
